Chapter Seven
I was lost in my thoughts when I realized that we’d come to a stop in front of the house. We were parked in front of a beautiful fountain that was the centerpiece of the circular driveway. Cameron was a true gentleman—as soon as he had the car in park he dashed over to my side of the car to open the door and let me out. They say southern men are supposed to be gentleman and do things like that but none of the men I’d dated had come anywhere close. It was extremely refreshing.
“After you,” Cameron said, smiling at me as he gestured toward the front door.
I stepped out of the car and pulled my coat in more tightly as the air kicked up with a cool breeze. The thin coat I was wearing for fashion’s sake wasn’t doing anything at all to keep me warm.
I realized my teeth were chattering on the short walk from the car to the front door when Cameron said, “I’ll let the chef know we’re here. I can’t wait for you to taste his cooking. I bring him with me everywhere I go. I simply can’t do with him.”
Not being able to do without a personal chef—what a thought. His world was so different from mine. My world consisted of several portions of Ramen noodles every month.
I was half expecting him to knock on his own door just so he wouldn’t have to turn the handle, but then I realized I was being kind of classist. Just because he was rich didn’t mean he was helpless. So far he’d shown me nothing of the sort—except for the personal chef thing.
It surprised me how easy he was to talk to. It was almost as if we’d known each other for years. Being around Cameron felt sort of like being… home. I shocked myself by thinking that but realized it was true. I, a short black girl from Georgia, felt completely at ease with a tall, white, handsome billionaire. Not just any billionaire, a billionaire who was my boss. The only times I felt uncomfortable were when I let my self-doubt creep up… he’d done nothing but make me feel wonderful.
“You’re being rather quiet,” he said as he clicked the latch to push his front door open. This was the kind of door that belonged on a castle; not a home.
“I’m just taking it all in. This is all really… magnificent.”
“I’m glad you like it. I know it’s a bit much… but it’s a nice space and I tried to make it feel comfortable and homey. I hope to someday have children running in and out of these doors.”
I smiled at him and held my breath as the door opened wider to reveal the foyer behind it. I wasn’t sure how a mansion could be considered comfortable and homey, but somehow he’d managed it. The ceilings were flocked with deep mahogany beams running up and down them. All around were portraits, showing what looked to be scenes from Paris, Milan, and London.
